How to Get a Marriage License in Boston
A Boston wedding is an exciting prospect. But getting a Boston marriage license is a vital thing you’ll need to take care of. Don’t worry, though, it’s easy! Just follow the directions below and pay careful attention to the stated waiting periods, deadlines, and expiry dates, and there’s no need for concern. So, here’s what you need to do:
Schedule Your Appointment at City Hall and fill out the pre-intention form
Go IN PERSON to City Hall to Complete Your Marriage License Requirements
Settle Your License Fees and Get Your License
Note: Anyone can have a wedding in Boston as long as both parties are at least 18 years old and have never been married before. Also, keep in mind that a marriage license in Massachusetts is only valid for 60 days from the date of application. Additionally, you are not permitted to utilize the marriage license outside of Massachusetts.
1. Schedule Your Appointment at City Hall and Fill Out the PRE-INTENTION Form
You will need to schedule an appointment to apply for a marriage license. Couples must apply together and in-person. Select a day and time for your appointment using the online scheduling tool. Once you schedule your appointment you’ll receive an electronic “PRE-INTENTION” form to fill out before you come. Reminder- this appointment must happen within 60 days of your wedding date.
2. Go To City Hall
To have your fabulous wedding in Boston there are several requirements that you’ll both need to go IN PERSON to City Hall for your appointment. You’ll need to bring valid ID, your Social Security number, and the $50 fee. After showing these pieces to the clerk, you’ll officially sign-off on the paperwork.
3. Get Your License AND RETURN IT after the wedding!
After you complete your papers, you need to settle your license fees in the City Hall. They will issue your marriage license and will put it in the mail three days later. It will be mailed to the address provided on your intention form under Party A. After the wedding ceremony is performed, the person officiating the ceremony will need to sign the license. The license must then be returned to the City (in person) to officially register the marriage.
